History of Denison

Denison was founded in 1872 as the southern terminus of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad — the "Katy" — and named for the railroad's vice president, George Denison. It grew almost overnight into a booming rail town of roughly 11,000 people, complete with the Katy Depot that still stands downtown today. Denison's most famous claim, though, is as the birthplace of Dwight D. Eisenhower: his parents, David and Ida Eisenhower, moved from Kansas in 1889 so David could work as a wiper cleaning steam engines in the Katy rail yards, and Dwight was born in their small rented house on October 14, 1890 — the only one of their seven children born in Texas.
