Fredericksburg was founded on May 8, 1846, when a wagon train of 120 German immigrants arrived from New Braunfels after a sixteen-day journey, led by John O. Meusebach, commissioner-general of the Adelsverein (formally the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas). Meusebach, who had renounced his baronial title to lead the settlement, chose a site sixty miles northwest of New Braunfels along the way to the Fisher-Miller Land Grant and named the new town after Prince Frederick of Prussia. The town was laid out like a German village along the Rhine, with one long main street following Town Creek. A year later, in 1847, Meusebach negotiated a peace treaty with the Penateka Comanche that, unlike most treaties between settlers and Native American tribes in Texas, was never broken.
