The area now called Manvel was first settled along Chocolate Bayou in July 1857 by the family of W.R. Booth. A townsite formed in 1890 at a crossing built by the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, which had come through the area in 1877 on its route from Galveston to Arcola.
