University Park grew up around Southern Methodist University, which was founded in 1911 and opened in this then-rural part of Dallas County in 1915. SMU supplied utility service to the small cluster of homes surrounding the campus, but by the early 1920s the growing population outstripped what the university could provide. Area homeowners first petitioned to be annexed into neighboring Highland Park but were turned down over the cost of extending services, so on April 24, 1924, voters approved incorporation as their own city by a roughly 5-to-1 margin, with University Park starting out at about 1,200 residents. Snider Plaza, one of the area's original shopping centers, opened a few years later in 1927 and remains a commercial hub for the city today.
