Burkburnett was platted on June 6, 1907, when the Red River Land Company auctioned off town lots after rancher Samuel "Burk" Burnett sold roughly 17,000 acres of his Four Sixes Ranch land to investors Joseph A. Kemp and Frank Kell for a railroad-driven townsite. The town took its name from Burnett himself. Everything changed on July 29, 1918, when the Fowler Farm Oil Company's Fowler No. 1 well struck oil at 1,734 feet — a discovery so unexpected it had been mocked beforehand as "Fowler's Folly." Within three weeks, 56 drilling rigs were running, the town's population swelled toward 8,000 almost overnight, and Burkburnett wells were producing about 7,500 barrels a day by year's end. That chaotic boomtown era later inspired the 1940 MGM film "Boom Town," starring Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy, based on a Cosmopolitan magazine story titled "A Lady Comes to Burkburnett."
