Longview was founded in 1870 when local landowner O.H. Methvin, Sr. sold 100 acres to the Southern Pacific Railroad for one dollar to bring the rail line through his property; a post office opened in January 1871, and the town incorporated on May 17, 1871, the first in Gregg County to do so. The name has two competing origin stories — the popular account holds that railroad surveyors coined it after remarking on the "long view" from Methvin's porch, while an 1870 Houston Telegraph article credited it to J.S.
