History of Elgin

Elgin was founded on August 18, 1872, when the Houston and Texas Central Railroad platted the townsite and named it for Robert Morris Elgin, the railroad's land commissioner. The town's location was itself shaped by an 1869 Colorado River flood that forced the railroad's planned route further north and east than originally intended. Rail growth accelerated in 1886 when the Taylor, Elgin and Bastrop Railroad was built and quickly acquired by the MKT ('Katy') Railroad, giving Elgin two rail lines and eight passenger trains a day by the time its population hit 831 in 1890. Just a few years after the town's founding, in 1882, William Moon opened Southside Market, which still operates today and is widely recognized as the oldest continuously running barbecue market in Texas, the origin of Elgin's famous 'hot gut' sausage.

Culture of Elgin

Downtown Elgin's historic district covers fourteen city blocks of brick commercial buildings dating from 1872 to 1947, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 in no small part because so many of those buildings were built from brick made right in town. That brick heritage is still visible walking around the old downtown, and it's part of what gives Elgin a distinct identity separate from the newer Austin-suburb subdivisions spreading in from the west.

Elgin's sausage tradition is just as central to local life. Southside Market and Meyer's Elgin Sausage both still operate in town, and the annual Western Days festival and the city's barbecue reputation draw visitors from well beyond Bastrop County. Combined, local brickyards and sausage makers give Elgin an economic identity built on two industries most Texas towns can't claim at all, let alone both at once.
