History of Kyle

Kyle was established on July 24, 1880, when local landowners David E. Moore and Fergus Kyle deeded 200 acres to the International-Great Northern Railroad for a townsite. Fergus Kyle, the town's namesake, was the son of early Hays County settlers and a Civil War veteran who served as a captain in Terry's Texas Rangers (the 8th Texas Cavalry). The railroad had originally planned to route through nearby Mountain City, but building a straight track from Austin to San Marcos through Kyle's land proved cheaper — so the line, and the town, ended up here instead. The first town lots sold at auction under the historic 'Auction Oak' that September, with the railroad providing free rides and food to draw a crowd from Austin. The city was formally incorporated in 1906.
