Seguin was founded on August 12, 1838, when a group of frontier Rangers laid out a settlement among live oaks beside Walnut Springs on the Guadalupe River — making it one of the oldest towns in Texas, established just 16 months after the Texas Revolution. Originally named Walnut Springs, the town was renamed within six months to honor Juan Nepomuceno Seguín, the Tejano statesman and San Jacinto veteran who fought alongside Anglo settlers against Santa Anna and later served as a senator of the Republic of Texas.
