History of Cibolo

Cibolo's name comes from the Spanish word for buffalo, chosen by local businessman Mr. Schlather when the railroad asked him to name the new town. The area was settled primarily by German immigrants in the mid-1800s, and the community itself traces back to 1867, when George Schlather built a store on land his father Jacob had purchased. The Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway (a Southern Pacific predecessor) built through the area in 1877 on its way to Houston and San Antonio, with the station originally called Cibolo Valley. The store changed hands and names a few times — briefly known as Fromme's Store after an 1882 sale — before the U.S. Post Office opened a branch under the name Cibolo in 1883. By 1890 the town had about 100 residents. Cibolo wasn't formally incorporated until August 1965, when a local election passed 72 to 2.
