Bastrop is one of the oldest Anglo settlements in Texas, platted in 1832 along the Spanish El Camino Real (the Old San Antonio Road), a colonial-era highway that connected Louisiana to Mexico through the Lost Pines. Stephen F. Austin named the townsite for his friend and colleague the Baron de Bastrop, and the community became a river crossing point and a hotbed of resistance to Mexican rule in the years before Texas independence. More recently, on September 4, 2011, the Bastrop County Complex Fire ignited and burned for over a month, destroying roughly 1,660-1,700 homes across about 32,000 acres — the most destructive wildfire in Texas history at the time. The fire devastated the Lost Pines forest and Bastrop State Park, and the area has spent over a decade replanting millions of loblolly pines to restore the landscape.

Culture of Bastrop

Bastrop has been designated a Texas Cultural Arts District since 2012, and its Main Street historic downtown — home to more than 130 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places — has earned it recognition as one of the most historic small towns in Texas, with antique shops, galleries, and restaurants filling century-old storefronts.
