Bryan traces its founding to 1860, when William Joel Bryan — nephew of Stephen F. Austin — sold a one-square-mile townsite north of Millican to railroad directors Abram Groesbeck and W.R. Baker for $3,200, and the settlement was named in his honor. Anticipating the railroad's arrival, Brazos County voters chose in 1866 to move both the county seat and post office from Boonville to Bryan, by then a village of about 300 people, and the first train steamed into town on August 19, 1867. That railroad link made Bryan a shipping and trading hub for the surrounding cotton-growing region years before neighboring College Station existed as a separate city.
