History of Bellmead

Bellmead was named for Belle Meade Farms, a well-known Tennessee horse farm, and began developing in the mid-1920s when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad built locomotive shops there, drawing in rail workers and their families. An early incorporation attempt in 1939 quickly failed for lack of water and sewer service, and WPA crews spent the Depression years building out basic infrastructure. The turning point came in 1942, when Waco Army Air Field opened just northeast of town — it was later renamed James Connally Air Force Base — and the local population exploded from about 25 people to 800 by 1949. Bellmead reincorporated for good in 1954 under a mayor-alderman government, and by 1960 it had grown to 5,127 residents. When the Air Force base closed in 1965, Texas A&M University stepped in to establish the James Connally Technical Institute on the site — the direct predecessor of today's Texas State Technical College (TSTC), whose Waco campus still occupies part of the former base and remains one of the area's largest institutions.

Culture of Bellmead

TSTC's Waco campus, headquartered on the old James Connally Air Force Base grounds, is one of Bellmead's defining institutions — it was the first school in the country to offer an associate degree in laser electro-optics technology and has trained generations of Central Texas workers in technical trades. Between TSTC, nearby Baylor University, and McLennan Community College, the Bellmead-Waco area has a substantial higher-education and workforce-training footprint that shapes the local economy.
