Pecos was organized around a Texas and Pacific Railway depot as the line pushed through West Texas in the 1880s, growing from an earlier camp where cattle drives crossed the Pecos River. The town is best known for its claim to be the birthplace of rodeo: on July 4, 1883, cowboys from competing area ranches settled an argument over who had the best hands by staging a public contest of bronc riding and steer roping on the south side of the Reeves County Courthouse, with prizes awarded to the winners. Encyclopedia Britannica recognizes Pecos as the home of the world's first rodeo on that basis, though Prescott, Arizona later held what it calls the first professional (admission-charging) rodeo in 1888.
