History of Snyder

Snyder traces back to 1878, when Pennsylvania buffalo hunter and trader William Henry "Pete" Snyder built a trading post on Deep Creek. Early residents lived in shelters made of buffalo hides and branches, which is how the settlement picked up its first nickname, "Hide Town." A formal town plan followed in 1882, and Snyder became the county seat when Scurry County organized in 1884. The town's most famous story predates the trading post: on October 7, 1876, buffalo hunter J. Wright Mooar shot a rare albino buffalo cow in Scurry County, one of only a couple ever confirmed taken in Texas. The hide was displayed as far away as the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, and a stone-and-mortar white buffalo statue has stood on the Scurry County Courthouse square in tribute ever since, with the town holding a White Buffalo Days festival each fall. Seven decades later, on July 30, 1948, the Sun Oil/Humble No. 1 Emil Schattel well struck the Canyon Reef formation north of town, kicking off an oil boom so fast the population jumped from about 4,000 to over 12,000 in a single year and peaked near 16,000 by 1951.

Snyder still calls itself the Home of the White Buffalo, and the courthouse-square statue is the town's most-photographed landmark.
