History of Sweetwater

Sweetwater's roots go back to 1877, when Billie Knight ran a dugout store on Sweetwater Creek to supply buffalo hunters working the area. A post office followed in 1879 in the small settlement then spelled "Sweet Water," and the Texas and Pacific Railway reached town in March 1881, the same year Nolan County organized and voters made Sweetwater the permanent county seat that April. "Sweet Water" was officially combined into one word, Sweetwater, in 1918. The town's defining chapter came during World War II: on February 21, 1943, the first trainees of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) arrived at Avenger Field, which for a stretch became the only all-female air base in American history apart from its male instructors and support crew. Fourteen classes and 1,074 women earned their wings there before the program was disbanded on December 20, 1944; the WASPs were later awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010, and Avenger Field today houses the National WASP WWII Museum.
