Where Can I Sell My Car for the Most Money in Texas?

It depends on your car and how much time you have. A private sale usually pays the most for a clean, running car, but it can take weeks. A dealer trade-in is the easiest and usually pays the least. An instant-offer buyer gives you a firm price in minutes, free pickup, and payment on the spot, and it's often the best net result for a car that's older, damaged, or doesn't run.

How to Sell Your Car in 3 Steps

Get your offer

Enter your VIN, or pick the year, make, and model. You see a firm cash offer in about 90 seconds, good for 7 days.

Pick a pickup time

Accept the offer and choose a time. We tow it free from anywhere in Texas, usually within a few days.

Get paid on the spot

Hand over the keys and title, and you're paid on the spot, usually by business check.

Our promises

No Surprises When the Truck Arrives

Texas sellers tell us what went wrong with other buyers. Here's what we do instead.

What sellers tell us"The price changed when the driver showed up."

Your price is locked

Your offer is good for 7 days. It's the price you're paid at pickup, as long as the car matches what you described and no major parts are missing.

What sellers tell us"They took the towing fee out of my payout."

Towing is truly free

No hook-up, mileage, or loading fees anywhere in Texas. Nothing comes out of your payout.

What sellers tell us"The buyer never transferred the title."

We help with the paperwork

We remind you to file Form VTR-346 with TxDMV within 30 days, so later tolls and tickets aren't charged to you.

What sellers tell us"No title? Everyone hung up on me."

No title isn't always a dead end

Lost titles can be replaced, and some older cars qualify for other routes.

How to Sell a Car in Texas: The Paperwork

Five steps protect you after any sale, whether you sell to us, a dealer, or a private buyer. The buyer titles the car within 30 days and pays the sales tax.

  1. Sign the title and 130-U

Sign and date the seller's section of the title exactly as your name appears on the front, write in the odometer reading, and sign Form 130-U showing the sales price.

  2. Clear any loan

If the car had a loan, the buyer needs a lien release from your lender, or a title that shows the lien released. Lenders have 10 days after payoff to release it.

  3. Handle the plates

In a private sale, remove your plates and registration sticker; you can move the plates to another car you own. When you sell to a dealer, the dealer removes standard plates.

  4. Report the sale to TxDMV

File a Vehicle Transfer Notification within 30 days, online or with Form VTR-346, using the buyer's name and address, so later tolls and tickets are not yours.

  5. Cancel insurance and toll tags

Once the car is gone and the notice is filed, cancel the insurance and take the car off your toll account.

Selling to us? We walk you through the title at pickup. Read the rules on TxDMV's selling a vehicle page.

Before you sell

Still Owe Money, Taxes, or Thinking of Fixing It?

The three questions Texas sellers search most right before they sell.

Still owe on the car?

You can sell a financed car once the lien is released. The usual path is to pay off the loan, with the sale money going toward it, and get the lender's lien release. Tell us about the loan when you get your offer.

Loan questions

Do you pay tax when you sell?

Not Texas sales tax: the buyer pays it when titling the car. Selling a personal car for less than you paid isn't a taxable gain, but selling for more can be.

IRS: capital gains

The $3,000 rule

When a car needs about $3,000 or more in repairs in a year, especially past 150,000 miles, it's usually time to sell rather than keep fixing it.

Fix it or sell it?

What Changes What My Car Is Worth?

Your offer is based on your exact car, not a guess. Here's what moves it up or down, and how selling to us compares with the other ways Texans sell a car.

What changes your offer

  • RaisesYear, make, and model. Some models are worth far more than their weight in parts.
  • RaisesRuns and drives. A car that starts and drives is worth more than scrap.
  • RaisesOriginal catalytic converter. It adds value. A missing one lowers the offer.
  • RaisesClean title in your name. It gets the strongest offer.
  • LowersMissing parts. No engine, transmission, wheels, or panels lowers the price.

Texas title rules

Selling a Car Without a Title in Texas?

It depends on the car's age and registration history. Here are the three situations we see most, with the TxDMV form for each.

Form VTR-34

You lost the title

If the car is titled in your name, order a certified copy of the title from TxDMV with Form VTR-34. The fee is $2 by mail or $5.45 in person. It's the cleanest path and gets the strongest offer.

Form VTR-341-2

The car is old and unregistered

A licensed used auto parts recycler may buy a car without a title only if it is at least 13 years old and hasn't been registered for at least 7 years, and only to dismantle or scrap it. The recycler reports the purchase to TxDMV within 24 hours.

Form VTR-346

After any sale

File a Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV within 30 days of selling. It records the date the car left your hands, so later tolls and tickets aren't charged to you. Remove your license plates before pickup.

Not sure which applies to your car? Read our guide to selling a car without a title in Texas.

Pickup day

Your Texas Pickup-Day Checklist

Do these before the truck arrives and pickup takes a few minutes. Tick them off as you go.

0 of 8 done

What happens at pickup

  1. The driver checks that the VIN and condition match what you described.
  2. You sign the title where the driver shows you and hand over the keys.
  3. You're paid on the spot, usually by business check.
  4. The car is towed away. Nothing is deducted for towing.

Stay safe with payment

  • Sign the title only once you have payment in hand.
  • To verify a check, call the bank using the number on the bank's own website, not one printed on the check.
  • Take a photo of the signed title and keep your receipt.
  • Prefer direct deposit? It arrives in about 3 business days.
Your car's problem

Got One of These Problems? We Still Buy It

Quick answers for the cars Texas sellers ask about most.

Blown engine

A seized or knocking engine doesn't stop a sale. The car is valued for its weight and parts, and towing is free since it can't drive.

More about this
Bad transmission

Slipping, no reverse, or stuck in gear: we buy it as-is. Repairs often cost more than the car is worth.

More about this
No keys

Lost keys are common. Tell us when you get your offer so the driver comes ready to tow it without them.

More about this
Flood damage or a flood title

Water in the cabin or engine, or a flood or salvage brand on the title, still sells. Describe the damage honestly so the offer holds.

More about this
Missing catalytic converter

A cut converter lowers the offer because it holds precious metals, but the car still sells. Say so up front and the price won't change at pickup.

More about this
Insurance totaled it

If your insurer declares a total loss, ask whether you can keep the car. A car with a salvage title can still be sold to us.

More about this
Wrecked or fire damaged

Front, rear, or side damage, airbags deployed, or burned: we make offers on wrecked cars in any condition.

More about this
At a shop or storage lot

Tell us where the car is. You'll usually need to settle any storage fees and get a release from the lot before it can be towed.

Questions

Selling Your Car in Texas: FAQs

Where can I sell my car for the most money in Texas?
A private sale usually pays the most for a car that runs well and is easy to sell, but it takes time, strangers, and paperwork. A dealer trade-in is easiest but usually pays the least. An instant-offer buyer sits in between: a firm price in minutes, free pickup, and payment at pickup. For cars that don't run or need work, an instant offer is often the best net result. Compare a few firm offers before you decide.
Who gives you the most cash for your car?
It depends on the car. Dealers pay more for cars they can resell quickly, private buyers pay more for clean, popular cars, and buyers like us price your exact car in any condition. The fairest test is a firm offer you can hold for a few days while you compare.
How do I sell my car in Texas?
Get an offer, sign the title over to the buyer (with the odometer reading), give them a lien release if there was a loan, remove your license plates and registration sticker, and file a Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV within 30 days. Cancel your insurance after the car is gone.
Do I need to notify the DMV when I sell my car in Texas?
Yes. File a Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV within 30 days of the sale, online or with Form VTR-346. It records when the car left your hands, so later tolls, tickets, and violations aren't charged to you.
What paperwork do I need to sell my car in Texas?
The title signed over to the buyer with the odometer reading, a signed Form 130-U showing the sales price, a photo ID, and a lien release if the car had a loan. The buyer titles the car and pays the sales tax. A bill of sale is optional but useful for your records.
Do I keep my license plates when I sell my car in Texas?
In a private sale, yes: remove your plates and registration sticker, and you can move the plates to another vehicle you own. When you sell to a dealer, the dealer removes standard plates (Texas rule since July 2025); specialty plates stay with you. Selling to us? We'll tell you what to do with the plates when you schedule pickup.
Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?
Yes, but the lien has to be released before ownership can transfer. The usual path is to pay off the loan, with the sale money going toward it, and get the lender's lien release or a title showing the lien released; lenders have 10 days after payoff to release it. Tell us about the loan when you get your offer and we'll explain what's needed.
Can I sell my car back to the dealership if I still owe on it?
Usually, yes. Dealers handle loan payoffs every day, but they often price the car lower to cover their costs. Get a firm outside offer first so you know what the car is worth before you talk to the dealer.
Do I have to pay taxes when I sell my car in Texas?
The seller doesn't pay Texas sales tax; the buyer pays the 6.25% motor vehicle tax when titling the car. For federal income tax, selling a personal car for less than you paid isn't a deductible loss, and selling for more can be a taxable gain. Check with a tax professional if you sold for a profit.
What is the $3,000 rule for cars?
It's a common rule of thumb: when a car needs about $3,000 or more in repairs in a year, especially past 150,000 miles, it's usually time to sell or replace it rather than keep fixing it.
Will my offer change at pickup?
Not if your description matches the car. The price you accept is the price you're paid. If the driver finds something you didn't mention, like a missing part or a different condition, you get a revised offer, and you're never obligated to sell.
Can I sell a car if the owner has died?
Yes. If the estate is in probate, the executor signs with Letters Testamentary. If not, the heirs use Form VTR-262 (Affidavit of Heirship for a Motor Vehicle), with all signatures notarized.
How fast can I sell my car?
You see a firm offer in about 90 seconds online. After you accept, pickup is usually within a few days, and same day in some areas. You choose the time.
How do I get paid?
On the spot at pickup, usually by business check, in exchange for the title and keys. Prefer direct deposit? It arrives in about 3 business days.
Is the offer free, and do I have to accept it?
Yes, it's free, and there's no obligation. Your offer is good for 7 days, and it's the price you're paid as long as the car matches what you described.
Do you buy cars that don't run or have no title?
Yes. We buy cars in any condition, running or not. Without a title, your options depend on the car's age and registration history; a certified copy from TxDMV (Form VTR-34) is the cleanest fix.
