Taylor was founded in 1876 when the Texas Land Company auctioned off town lots ahead of the International-Great Northern Railroad's arrival. The stop was first called Taylor Station, then Taylorsville, honoring I&GN official Edward Moses Taylor, before the town incorporated under the shortened name Taylor in 1884. The Missouri-Kansas-Texas ("Katy") Railroad reached town in 1882, linking Taylor into a east-west rail network that turned it into a cotton-shipping hub. Taylor's first mayor was Daniel Moody, father of Dan Moody — who became the youngest governor in Texas history at age 33 after building his name as a prosecuting attorney who successfully took on the Ku Klux Klan.
