Alice was established in 1888 when the railroad depot serving the area, originally called Bandana, moved a few miles west. Area residents first petitioned to name the townsite "Kleberg" after South Texas rancher Robert Justus Kleberg, but the U.S. Post Office rejected it because a Texas town named Kleberg already existed.
