History of El Campo

El Campo's site began in 1882 as a rough railroad camp known as Prairie Switch, a stop on the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway surrounded by open cattle range. Mexican vaqueros working the surrounding ranches called the area El Campo, Spanish for "the countryside," and the name stuck when the community organized in 1890. Four large ranches, including the Texas Land and Cattle Company's KO Ranch and the Pierce Ranch, once encircled the settlement, and when the Texas Land & Cattle Company opened its holdings to settlers in 1895, the town's population began to grow in earnest. El Campo was formally incorporated in 1905.

Culture of El Campo

Rice farming transformed El Campo's economy in the early 1900s. The first rice mill opened in 1903, a second followed in 1908, and by 1904 roughly seventy rice farms and 126 pumping stations were operating around the town. The two early mills eventually consolidated into the El Campo Rice Milling Company, an operation still remembered locally today under the ELCO name, and that rice heritage lives on in the high school mascot: the El Campo Ricebirds.

Agriculture remains central to El Campo's identity, with cattle ranching, rice, and row crops like milo, corn, cotton, and soybeans still worked across the surrounding coastal prairie, alongside oil and gas field work and contracting tied to nearby Gulf Coast operations. The El Campo Ricebirds also carry one of the state's more storied high school football programs, with two state championship game appearances, in 1967 and again in 2012, a source of local pride even without a title to show for it.
