Bee County was created by the Texas Legislature on December 8, 1857, carved out of parts of Refugio, Live Oak, San Patricio, Goliad, and Karnes counties, and named for Barnard E. Bee Sr., who had served as secretary of war and secretary of state for the Republic of Texas. A rail line reached town in 1886, and in 1943 the Navy opened Beeville Naval Air Station, which later reopened as Naval Air Station Chase Field in 1952 and trained military pilots until it closed in 1992. In September 1967, Hurricane Beulah dumped roughly 30 inches of rain on the area, flooding the town and leaving a lasting mark on local memory of just how much water this part of South Texas can take on during a bad storm season.
