Ingleside's roots go back to 1854, when settler George C. Hatch bought bayou-front land and eventually assembled more than 3,800 acres, selling parcels to early families including the Ingalls, Nolds, Pollards, and Vineyards. Tradition holds that John W. Vineyard named the community 'Ingleside' — Scottish for 'fireside' — after his ancestral home. When the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway bypassed the original settlement in 1887, developers laid out a new townsite on the rail line in 1893, and the town's modern site was developed by Burton and Danforth in 1909. Ingleside incorporated in 1951. Four decades later, the U.S. Navy opened Naval Station Ingleside in 1992 as homeport for its Mine Warfare Command fleet of minesweepers; the base closed in 2010 under the 2005 BRAC round after 18 years of active service, and the site was sold in 2012 to become today's oil export terminal.
