Granbury was founded in 1866 after brothers J. and J.H. Nutt donated forty acres of riverfront land for a new townsite, the same year Hood County was carved out of Johnson and Erath counties and named for Confederate general John Bell Hood. The town itself took its name from Gen. Hiram Bronson Granbury. It took three contested elections to settle Granbury as the county seat over rivals Glen Rose and Fort Spunky, and the county's first two courthouses both burned down before the current Hood County Courthouse, a French Second Empire limestone landmark designed by architect W.C. Dodson, was completed in 1891. The Granbury Opera House followed in 1886, and the historic square around them became the first courthouse square in Texas listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
