History of Spring

Spring traces back to an 1830s trading post that William Pierpont built on Spring Creek, and by 1840 the settlement had about 153 residents. The community was platted in 1873 as a stop on the International and Great Northern Railroad and was known informally as "Camp Spring" before settling on the name Spring, reportedly for the excitement railroad workers felt reaching the area's springs after a hard winter. German immigrants, including Carl Wunsche, settled the area as farmland in the mid-1840s, and Spring grew into a railroad switchyard town with roughly 200 rail workers by the 1910s before the roundhouse relocated to Houston in 1923 and the town declined until Houston's oil-driven growth revived it decades later.

Culture of Spring

Spring's modern economy is tied closely to Houston's energy sector — ExxonMobil opened a roughly 9,000-employee corporate campus adjacent to Spring in 2014 and completed its move of the company's global headquarters there from Irving by 2023. Old Town Spring, a restored historic downtown with more than 150 shops, restaurants, and galleries, remains the community's best-known landmark and a draw for visitors from across the Houston area.

Because Spring sits along Spring Creek and Cypress Creek, it took real flood damage during Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 — the Cypress Creek watershed recorded 29.3 inches of rain over four days, and the Cypress Creek Cultural District along Cypresswood Drive flooded badly enough that The Centrum performance hall took on about 2 feet of water and didn't reopen until spring 2021.
