Rowlett takes its name from Rowlett Creek, which was itself named for Daniel Rowlett, an early Kentucky-born settler who moved to the Bonham, Texas area in 1835 and had no direct connection to the town that later carried his name. The community's first post office opened April 5, 1880, under the name "Morris," after postmaster Austin Morris, before the settlement was renamed Rowlett.
