History of Freeport

Freeport was formally founded and dedicated by the Freeport Sulphur Company in November 1912, growing from about 300 residents that year to roughly 3,500 by 1929, and it incorporated on February 10, 1917. The city's defining moment came on March 7, 1940, when the Dow Chemical Company bought 800 acres along Freeport Harbor after a board of directors' meeting scheduled to pick between Corpus Christi and Freeport was moved at the last minute because of an ice storm in Corpus Christi. Dow's magnesium plant began production on January 21, 1941, supplying material for World War II aircraft, and within about two decades the Freeport complex grew into the largest integrated chemical manufacturing site in the world. In July 1957, the neighboring and older town of Velasco, one of the oldest settlements in Texas, was formally annexed into Freeport.

Culture of Freeport

Freeport's economy still centers on Dow Chemical's Texas Operations, the company's largest integrated manufacturing site, along with Port Freeport, a major deepwater shipping port handling over 17 million tons of cargo a year. The city is also home to Freeport LNG, a liquefied natural gas export terminal that began exporting in 2019 and made national news after a 2022 pipeline rupture and explosion temporarily shut the facility down for roughly eight months.

Freeport shares the Brazosport Independent School District with its Brazosport neighbors, and is home to Brazosport High School along with Freeport Elementary and Freeport Intermediate School. Historically, Freeport has weathered severe hurricanes, most notably the 1932 Freeport hurricane, a Category 4 storm with winds near 150 mph that caused roughly $7.5 million in damage and 40 deaths regionally, and more recently Hurricane Ike in 2008, which brought 5 to 10 feet of storm surge to Brazoria County even though its eye passed well north near Galveston.
