History of Pharr

Pharr was founded in 1909 when John C. Kelly, along with partners Henry N. Pharr, W.E. Cage, and R.C. Briggs, formed the Pharr Townsite Company and platted the new town along the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway line, which had reached the area in 1905. Kelly named the settlement after his partner Henry N. Pharr, a Louisiana sugarcane grower who had co-founded a canal company to bring irrigation to the arid Rio Grande Valley. By 1911, roughly 4,000 acres around the new rail stop had already been sold for settlement, and the city was formally incorporated in 1916 as citrus and vegetable farming took hold under the new irrigation network.
