History of Bonham

Bonham traces back to 1837, when Bailey Inglish built a small stockade called Fort Inglish to protect early settlers in what was then Fannin County's frontier. The settlement was first known as Bois d'Arc, briefly renamed Bloomington in 1843, and then renamed again in honor of James Butler Bonham, a Texan who died defending the Alamo in 1836 and had ridden through the area seeking reinforcements. The city officially incorporated on February 2, 1848. Bonham later became known nationally as the hometown of Sam Rayburn, the longest-serving Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, whose home just outside town — built in 1916 and expanded during his career — was turned into the Sam Rayburn House Museum and State Historic Site by the Texas Historical Commission in 1972, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
