Paris was founded in 1844 after merchant George W. Wright donated 50 acres of land to Lamar County to secure the county seat, and one of Wright's employees, Thomas Poteet, suggested naming the new town after Paris, France. It was formally incorporated by the Republic of Texas Congress in February 1845. The city's history took its most dramatic turn on March 21, 1916, when a fire believed to have started from a spark near a warehouse and driven by winds estimated at 50 mph burned through roughly 260 acres and destroyed about 1,400 buildings, including the Lamar County Courthouse, in a blaze visible up to 40 miles away. Three people died and property damage was estimated at $11 million in 1916 dollars; the rebuilt downtown that rose afterward is now recognized as one of the best-preserved examples of post-Victorian architecture in the country.
